“Vehicle of transformation” is a painting that presents an old wooden pea green boat floating in several skies: the night sky seen from a plane window, the Glastonbury Tor seen from the Henry VIII ruined monastery, and the Horse Head Nebula in our own galaxy. A boat is a symbol of transformation. It carries one from place to place as Charon carries the dead to the isle of oblivion. The zodiac is a form of divination, foretelling the future. The painting also contains a pun, if you can find it.
James H. Vredevoogd holds a BA from Michigan State University and an MFA in painting from Cranbrook Academy of Art. His paintings are in the permanent collections of two museums, two universities, and various private collections. An Emeritus professor of Art at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, he taught painting, drawing, and performance Art for thirty-two years.
