“Going, going, gone” is a painting composed around an image of the interaction of protons and electron particles photographed inside a cyclotron or atom smasher. Their interaction as described by professor Feynman in one of the diagrams at the lower right, explains how new matter is created on a molecular level at very high velocities. I perceived this as having metaphoric content beyond the level of information provided by particle physics. The disappearance of species, the interaction of planetary systems, the connections between the tattoos on “Indians” taken to visit Queen Elizabeth the First and the photographic trails of blasted particles, as well as Australian Aboriginal creation myth drawings are all related in human knowledge. What is a Pepsi cannot related to?
James H. Vredevoogd holds a BA from Michigan State University and an MFA in painting from Cranbrook Academy of Art.
