“Portrait: Brazil”, 2011
In 1990 I visited Brazil. This painting is a recollection of the human conditions there. Brazil is a country with no middle class and an economic/political structure designed to keep it that way. This painting presents the two worlds of Brazil: the rich, who wall out the poor in “Favelas” keeping them away from the benefits enjoyed by the rich like access to the beach.
James H. Vredevoogd holds a BA from Michigan State University and an MFA in painting from Cranbrook Academy of Art. His paintings are in the permanent collections of two museums, two universities, and various private collections. An Emeritus professor of Art at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, he taught painting, drawing, and performance Art for thirty-two years.
